The new entries include phrases which have rapidly entered common usage such as casino banking and Arab Spring.

There is the usual crop of portmanteau words – words which are formed by blending sounds from two or more different words and combining their meanings.

These can often be quite amusing. Cellfish describes the rude and inconsiderate behaviour of some mobile phone users.

Foodoir, however, is misleading. It suggests food to be eaten in a boudoir- oysters, smoked salmon or caviar, perhaps – but, according to the Collins English Dictionary, actually means a book or blog which combines a personal memoir with a series of recipes.

But the booby prize for the worst new word goes to mumpreneur, which is clumsy and almost unpronounceable. It’s like a car which has been badly welded together from two write-offs.

Less is more may be a cliché but it’s worth bearing in mind when it comes to websites.

Words are powerful. Words can hurt. Words can make you laugh. Words can make you cry.

Think how powerful a single word can be. Fire. Help. Stop. Warning. Silence.

And how much more powerful a word can be when it’s combined with other words.

Now think about your website. People are busy. You may only have a few seconds to grab their attention. Make them want to look round. Buy something.

Too much text can be overwhelming and can deter them from reading on.

Choose your words wisely. Use them sparingly.

Don’t say a little in a lot of words. Say a lot in a few.
